Poetry: “When a Privilege Becomes a Right” (from July 9, 2010)

When a Privilege become a Right

Many folks will fight

When those rights are at risk

Political organization becomes quite brisk

When a Privilege becomes a Right

Union members will fight

When those rights are at threat

Even if we all go into debt

It’s more than an even bet

When suffragettes won the vote

Women didn’t want to miss the boat

Today they take for granted

What they once could only rant about

When your boss is unfair

Or the CEO doesn’t care

If we all went on strike

Our pay or benefits could be hiked

Or they’ll hire some ‘scabs’ and tell us all to take a hike

When a privilege becomes a right

Many people will fight

From dark til light

Even when the perk is trite

Such as a peaceful vigil

Though angry mobs they aren’t so civil.
